The Growth and Development of Goldfish

The Habits of Goldfish (2): The Growth and Development of Goldfish

1.The Growth of Goldfish

Fish cannot live without water, as water is the living environment on which fish depend for survival. The density of water is much greater than that of air. Fish living in water, unlike animals living in the air, do not need to consume a lot of energy to maintain their body balance. Fish are also poikilothermic animals. Within a certain range, their body temperature can change with the water temperature, and they do not need to consume a lot of energy to maintain a constant body temperature. In this sense, the food nutrients that fish ingest from the outside world can be used more for their body growth and development. Goldfish are no exception, and they have great growth potential. Generally speaking, in waters with a low stocking density, abundant bait, and a relatively high water temperature, goldfish grow faster; conversely, they grow more slowly.

There is a close connection between the growth rate of goldfish and their lifespan. Under good living conditions, the lifespan of an average goldfish can be as long as 18 years. Rare and precious goldfish are more prone to decline and have a shorter lifespan. Among the same species of goldfish, the larger individuals that are sparsely stocked, fed with abundant bait, and thus grow faster generally have a shorter lifespan compared to the smaller individuals that are stocked at a normal density and fed with less bait. They also have a lower resistance to possible adverse stimuli during the breeding process. Therefore, when keeping goldfish at home, it is important to avoid overfeeding, and it is not advisable to cultivate goldfish to be too large in size.

2.The Development of Goldfish

The growth and development rate of goldfish is very rapid. Generally speaking, they reach sexual maturity after half a year and can reproduce offspring.

Goldfish do not have strict requirements for the environmental conditions necessary for their development. Under the condition of home breeding, goldfish can not only develop and mature smoothly in a relatively large fish tank. Even in a smaller aquarium with a water depth of 30 centimeters and a capacity of about 20 kilograms of water, if the stocking density is appropriate, they can also mature and reproduce offspring.

The three main factors that affect the speed of goldfish development and the time of sexual maturity are nutrition, water temperature, and the duration of daylight. To ensure good development of goldfish, efforts must be made focusing on these three factors. In daily feeding and management, it is necessary to pay attention to keeping the water quality clean, ensuring that the bait is rich in nutrients and palatable, and feeding properly. Especially before winter, it is necessary to consciously select bait with a relatively high protein and fat content. After winter, when the water temperature rises to around 10°C in spring, goldfish begin to eat. Careful feeding is required. At the same time, move the fish breeding container to a warm environment and try to extend the duration of sunlight exposure. These are all important conditions for promoting the rapid development, early reproduction, and strong offspring of goldfish.
